Job Description

Intralox LLC, a leader in product-handling technology for food processing, manufacturing, and logistics, is looking for a Packaging Engineer for our Manufacturing Engineering Group (MEG). The successful candidate will be a highly talented and self-managed individual who drives for positive engineering change.


ThePackaging Engineerwill be responsible for creating new, and optimizing existing box, tote, and pallet specifications for various products ranging from small parts in corrugated to equipment, sub-assemblies, and fully assembled conveyor systems on large pallets or custom crates. They will analyze and select materials for packaging based on load stability, durability, sustainability, and cost effectiveness. This includes corrugated shipping cartons, wooden crates, pallets, gaylords, plastic hands totes, steel racks, and mailer style packaging. ThePackaging Engineeris responsible for continually reviewing and improving existing packaging designs, and will work with internal resources, as well as packaging suppliers, to achieve the optimal packaging solution.

Responsibilities
  • Work with cross-functional teams (new product development, quality, shipping, automation engineers, packaging vendors/consultants, purchasing, and others) to design and optimize packaging solutions for Intralox globally (to/from Intralox facilities as well as end users/integrators)
  • Identify and implement cost saving initiatives related to packaging materials, dunnage, labor, efficiency, transportation, and storage
  • Ensure proposed packaging design changes are validated, appropriately tested, documented, deployed, and monitored throughout the organization
  • Work with external suppliers to design, qualify, and procure packaging components and packaging equipment
  • Ensure stable pallet load design in accordance with automated bulk warehouse requirements
  • Develop specifications and optimizations for acceptable void space inside boxes so as to minimize damage to boxes under loading.
  • Perform root cause analysis related to design, material, or process failures
  • Complete packaging transit testing and bench study experiments for packaging design
  • Summarize, analyze, and draw conclusions from test results
  • Cost and payback analysis on packaging expenses throughout the organization.
  • Keep abreast of new technologies and advances in the packaging industry
  • Develop and maintain packaging standards for use with vendors and internal groups
  • Create and maintain a database of packaging materials for internal and customer packing
  • May train and/or provide work direction to technicians
  • Work independently to plan and schedule own activities necessary to meet project timelines
  • Participate in the Manufacturing Operations Support team, which consists of manufacturing focused Industrial Engineers, Packaging Engineers, and Analysts
  • Participate in the Packaging Category Management Team (PCMT), which consists of a cross functional team that aligns packaging opportunities, priorities, and decisions (supply chain, engineering, plant management, warehouse management, and shipping professionals)
Requirements
  • B.S. in Packaging Science, Packaging Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or related discipline
  • 3-5 years of experience in packaging design for industrial applications: manufacturing or warehouse environment
  • Knowledge of and experience in design and fabrication of transport, storage, and WIP packaging
  • Experience in fulfillment and distribution packaging
  • Ability to interpret CAD and other Assembly drawings, specs and layouts
  • Must be detail oriented and have strong analytical and problem solving skills
  • Must have experience with data analysis to optimize packaging
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to travel as needed, up to 25%
  • Strong learning mindset and the ability to take on new challenges
  • High comfort level with pitching new ideas and challenging status quo
  • On-site position, located in our Baltimore facility
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience with corrugated packaging design for LTL, Ocean & Air Freight
  • Solid knowledge of packaged transit testing methods
  • Working knowledge or experience with Oracle ERP
  • Knowledge of Materials Management/Logistics/Supply Chain techniques
  • Familiarity with Packaging and Palletizing software
  • Familiarity with 3D parametric modeling: Autodesk Inventor or SolidWorks preferred
  • Certified Packaging Professional (CPP) or Certified Professional in Training (CPIT)
