This job provides clinical assessment, care, support, and education to breastfeeding mothers within both the inpatient and outpatient setting and collaborates with the nursing and medical staff regarding the care of the breastfeeding dyad. Provides support for the mother-infant breastfeeding dyad. Assesses, plans, intervenes, and evaluates lactation support and education for clients in the postpartum period. Assesses, plans, implements, documents, and evaluates the plan of care regarding breastfeeding women.

Education

Required - High school diploma or equivalent.

Preferred - Associate degree in public health, education or related field.

Work Experience

Required - 1 year of lactation consultant experience.

Certifications

Required - International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners (IBCIC) certification upon hire.

Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification from the American Heart Association. Neonatal Resuscitation Program certificate (NRP) within 3 months of hire.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities (KSAs)

  • Ability to assess and evaluate patient care for breastfeeding mothers and babies, utilizing evidence based practice.

  • Ability to collaborate with patient and family to develop and implement a plan of care that includes physical, spiritual and educational components.

  • Ability to work with state-of-the-art technology.

  • Ability to manage lactation assignment effectively.

  • Ability to provide equipment as needed, formulate feeding plan with parents, and make referrals for services as needed.

  • Proficiency in using computers, software, and web-based applications.

  • Effective verbal and written communication skills and ability to present information clearly and professionally.

  • Strong interpersonal skills.

  • Organizational skills.

Job Duties

  • Assesses the adequacy of breastfeeding and provides interventions and education as necessary for correction and/or prevention of feeding problems for breastfeeding babies and mothers.

  • Assists mothers of infants who cannot breastfeed to establish and maintain a milk supply and store their milk appropriately.

  • Collaborates with the infant's or mother's primary care provider and hospital or clinic staff as needed to implement feeding interventions to meet the infant's and/or mother's medical needs.

  • Provides post discharge support of breastfeeding for patients through telephone consultation, clinical visits, and consultation with the primary care provider of the mother or infant.

  • Contributes to the achievement of divisional and organizational goals.

  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
